Winter Carnival.

Every year MTU ( Michigan Technological University) has winter carnival.
One of the things that are always done are snow/ice sculptures.
The weather also was perfect for it...
Enough snow had fallen prior to the event, wasn't too cold, but cold enough to keep them from thawing
And the most important weather condition
Two....yes, I said Two days of Sun to enjoy the sculptures.
Hubby as a student of MTU spent Wednesday night there helping to build one of the sculptures
His group NAHB won first place in the All nighter category.

Winter Carnival

This year their theme was Villains and Heroes Find Their Powers in These Frozen Winter Hours.

Phi Kappa Tau took First Place In Fraternity Division
This division had a month to work on their sculptures
" In this snowy Winter Dream, A Super Family Becomes a Team."
The Incredibles

Project 52 - Week 6 - Entrance

This week's theme is Entrance which I had a hard time coming up  something.
Yes, I could have taken a picture of a door
But that seemed like it would be too easy and boring..
So I decided to take a picture of an entrance
To the towns of Houghton and Hancock
The Portage Lift Bridge.

Project 52 - Entrance

The Portage Lift Bridge connected Hancock and Houghton, so is an entrance to either town depending on which way you are coming.  In the summer the bridge lifts up letting the boats go through the canal on their way to Lake Superior.

Be sure to check the others  that are joining me in the interpretation of  Entrance:

Project 52 - Week 5- Cold

January has come to an end and left us with many frigidly cold days
I am not sure if it because I am getting older (because I am NOT),
the cold creeps deep inside me, chilling my bones.
This weeks Project 52 is

Cold

I have had no problem with pictures of the cold...
All I had to do is go outside and take pictures around our house.

This picture was taken through the frost on the plexiglass... Too cold to go outside!

I did step outside to take this one... was trying to get the smoke from the chimney...
I do try to remember that even though it is cold here, or at least I think it is
It is probably colder somewhere else... Like Saskatchewan where the wind chill was close to -50C
BRRRRRR.

Check out the rest of the group's reflections on COLD!

Mid- Winter Festival

Each year around this time is Heikinpäivä. ~  A Finnish American festivity to celebrate that winter is half over... as the Finnish saying goes
karhu kääntää kylkeä (the bear rolls over to the other side).
This past Saturday, Hancock was filled with people ready to celebrate winter and that it is half over.
Parades, markets filled with Finnish foods and crafts and winter activities filled the streets.
I wasn't able to take many pictures as I was busy helping with a table at the market,
selling riisipurro (rice porridge) and berry soup

The Parade

Girls found a great place to watch the parade

The parade consists of many people dressed in Sami gakti which is tradition  clothes of the Sami or Lapland people.  Some have character costume which are Finnish or Finnish American Forklore.

Some of the outdoor activities

kicksled races

vipukelkka or whipsled, which mimics a modern day merry go round

Other activities that are held are wife carrying contests,  boot toss and polar plunge - jumping in the cold Canal.  This year the polar plunge was cancelled due the warm weather at the beginning of the month and the inability of having some where warm to go after the plunge.

This year we were lucky as the weather cooperated.. it warmed up and there were only a few snow flakes falling.  Making the day an enjoyable one.

Project fifty-two ~ Repetition

I am a little bit late getting this posted.
I did have a picture yesterday but glad I waited for today.
Yesterday I saw some icicles forming from the snow that was draping down from our roof and thought that this was perfect for this post.
Today those icicles were melting and dripping..

Repetition of Drips

Here is the first picture I took..
.
